Miss
Southern Rivers wins third preliminary
Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ga.
- Lauren Ledbetter, Miss Southern Rivers, won the
talent competition Thursday night for a sweep of all
three preliminary categories in the 62nd Miss Georgia
Pageant.
Ledbetter, a 23-year-old
University of Georgia student competing in the pageant
for the first time, sang "I Am Woman." She was a winner
in both lifestyle and fitness/swimsuit and in evening
wear Wednesday under a new format that has both novice
contestant preliminary winners and returning pageant
veterans.
The returning contestant winner
in talent Thursday was Miss South Georgia, Marsha Moore,
who tap danced to Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." Miss Gwinnett County, Erina
Patterson, was a double winner among the novices, in
swimsuit and evening wear. The returning swimsuit
winner, Miss Onion Capital Devan Fleming, was a talent
winner on Tuesday. The returnee winner in evening
wear Thursday, the final night for preliminary
competition, was Leslie Culbertson, Miss Elliottia.
The finals and crowning of the
new Miss Georgia will be Saturday night at the
RiverCenter for the Performing Arts.

Ready to represent
Contestants gear up for annual state scholarship contest
After three long days of rehearsals,
contestants from around the state are just about ready to don
their dresses, debut their talents and discuss their platforms in
the 62nd Miss Georgia Scholarship Pageant. The competition, which
will be held in Columbus at the Bill Heard Theatre of the River Center for the Performing Arts, will begin Tuesday and run
through Saturday.
The eager contestants converged on Columbus
on Friday evening and began practicing immediately for the
competition consisting of five phases -- private interview,
talent, swim wear, on stage question and evening wear segments.
The talent portion of the competition is
where Miss Columbus, Chasity Hardman, said she feels most
confident. Hardman said she has been competing in
beauty pageants since she was 4 years old and is now ready to take
center stage and be crowned Miss Georgia.
With that crown comes a $15,000 cash
scholarship, jewelry and a wardrobe for the Miss America
Competition. Smooth jazz echoed off the walls of the
nearly empty theater Sunday afternoon as 45 high-heeled
contestants glided effortlessly across the sleek stage wearing
elegant evening gowns. There were no major missteps in rehearsals
as each Miss Georgia hopeful navigated the stage.
"This competition is a great opportunity for
the refinement of young women," Hardman said during a rare break
in the action.
Contestants will meet for one more rehearsal
before beginning the preliminary competition Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The winner will be crowned Saturday night.

Hardman says her passion is music. Jessica Scott hopes to one
day own a barn full of horses and a big truck. Scott's favorite
food is Italian while Hardman craves chocolate.
Although it may
not seem like it, these two seemingly different women do share one
thing in common. Both proudly walked the stage Tuesday as local
representatives in the 62nd Annual Miss Georgia Scholarship
Pageant. They are among the 45 contestants competing for the
crown held by Miss Georgia Monica Pang.
Scott, 19, is
Miss Columbus State University. She's a self-proclaimed "cowgirl"
from Hamilton, who aspires to be a singer and physical therapist.
A sophomore majoring in exercise, Scott has found an interesting
way to fuse her love for both horses -- she has been riding since
she was 8 -- and physical therapy. It's hippotherapy, a method of
treating disabilities that involves working with horses.
Scott started competing in pageants when she was 17. The
scholarship money and the chance to garner onstage experience were
two incentives that lured her out of her cowboy boots and into
high heels.
Hardman, 21,
was born and raised in Columbus, so naturally the junior at
Georgia State University in Atlanta is excited to represent her
hometown as Miss Columbus in the Miss Georgia Pageant. "Oh
wow, I feel so honored," she said. "Just to know that I have a
city that loves and supports the person that represents their
city." Hardman's platform is D.R.E.A.M. -- Developing,
Reaching, Educating and Mentoring Through Music. It is a program
that mentors youths, ages 7 to 12, on social skills and
multicultural awareness through music.
Competition
continues at 7:30 p.m. today at the RiverCenter for the Performing
Arts.
